A ‘selendang’ or shoulder cloth is a narrow piece of rectangular cloth worn over the shoulder. This brightly coloured textile is patterned by weaving together rows of different coloured threads. Cloths with this patterning are sometimes called ‘kain Bugis’ (‘Bugis cloth’), a name which may hint at the origins of the style. Weaving in Terengganu probably dates back to the early eighteenth century and was closely related to the weaving tradition of the Johor-Riau Sultanate.
