Wall plaques

This pair of wall plaques is stiffened with layers of cardboard and cotton wadding. The decorative motifs are formed with tiny coloured ‘seed beads’ or ‘Rocaille beads’ using the technique of threading. The motifs on this pair of plaques consist of peony blossoms and birds. Peony blossoms in full bloom were fertility symbols and also symbolised wealth and prosperity. Bead tassels hang from the bottom of these pieces. These ornaments were usually hung on the wall or attached to ceremonial furniture in the bridal chamber.
