Embroidered panels such as this commonly used thread work techniques such as the satin stitch and the Peking stitch. The former is a technique where a series of flat stitches are used to cover a section of a fabric. Red stitches are used here to create various floral motifs on this panel. This includes the motif of a flowering tree with a pair of phoenix. The phoenix is an auspicious symbol in the Chinese culture and represents high virtue. Even numbers are considered good in Peranakan culture and this explains why the phoenix is represented as a pair. This panel also has a border created from bead embroidery. Coloured glass beads are stitched onto the base fabric to create motifs of various insects. Insects are symbols of fertility and abundance. Hence, it is possible that this piece was used during wedding ceremonies or hung in the wedding chamber.
