Valance for temple

The tiny loops on the upper edge of this textile suggest that it was a hanging, and was perhaps used as a temple decoration. It depicts a scene from the 'Ramayana', a Hindu epic, where King Janaka orders that only whoever can break the bow of Shiva shall marry his daughter, Sita. Ramayana is popular only in the arts of Bali, where Hinduism is fully embraced.
