Hangings

This pair of embroidered flat panels shaped like neckties is created using satin and voided satin stitching, metallic thread couching and bead netting. The satin stitch consists of parallel stitches laid close together used to fill up a decorative pattern. These include motifs of rose like peonies and birds. Peonies are auspicious symbols of wealth and prosperity. Gold thread couching is used here to outline the significant features on the panels. Sequins and bead tassels hang from the bottom of the panel. Necktie shaped hangings such as these were usually found in the bridal chamber. These ornamental hangings were hung from the four poster wedding bed and came as a pair. They served no real functional purpose, except to carry good wishes and happy tidings to the wedding couple.
