Beaded ceremonial aprons such as this piece, are believed to have been produced by women on the island of Yapen in Cenderawasih Bay, using imported glass beads. They were traded extensively in the Bird Head Peninsula region of Western New Guinea. Sources are not clear on whether these were worn only for dances or for other ceremonial occasions but were probably worn by both men and women. The apron is divided into grids of rhomb and a fringe of tassels of short rows of beads decorates the lower edge.
