Necklace

Known as the Seurapi, this beautiful necklace from Aceh is composed of a series of flower or leaf-shaped pendants, linked with a double chain. These multiple pendants are decorated with golden wire filigree and faceted granulation, a characteristic of Acehnese art. The Seurapi is an integral part of the Achenese wedding costume although they vary significantly from region to region, and differ according to the socio-economic status of the wearer. Necklaces such as this one were sometimes owned by professional wedding organisers hired to dress the bride. These professionals were usually women and rented sets of wedding accessories to the families of the bride and the groom.
