This is a large embroidered vase. The fabric is stiffened with a backing to form a three dimensional receptacle. The colourful decorative motifs of peony flowers and birds are created using tiny coloured glass ‘seed beads’ or ‘Rocaille beads’ threaded together. Peony flowers are auspicious symbols in Chinese culture and symbolise wealth and prosperity.Such vases could be placed on the dressing table and artificial flowers could be placed in them. Their purpose were largely ornamental.
