Pillow cover

This pair of salmon pink pillow covers is made from silk and uses the satin and knot stitch. The decorative motifs on this piece consist of floral and bird designs. Some of the features are outlined with gold thread couching. The edges are framed with a border of brocaded material woven with geometric patterns as well as beaded tassels. Such smaller pieces of embroidered panels could have been hand sewn by local Nonyas themselves, although this was possibly made in a Chinese workshop. The ability to create this intricate pieces of embroidery showed the lady’s skill and patience, qualities admired in the Peranakan women.
