Bed runner

This mattress panel or bed runner is made out of closely threaded coloured seed or Rocaille beads. Most of such beaded panels were done using the technique of threading or bead embroidery. The coloured beads are stitched onto a base fabric, usually velvet or cotton canvas, using needle and thread. Here, the fusion of European culture is evident in the design of the panel. Apart from the rose-like peony blossoms, there are also motifs of cats, dogs and young European girls, giving the design some semblance of British handicraft in the Victorian era. The inspiration for these motifs possibly came from design pattern and cross stitch books imported from Europe.Wedding bed runners such as this were part of the embroidery and beadwork pieces used to decorate the bridal chamber. It was attached to the sides of the mattress that were visible and contributed to the festive expressions of the wedding celebrations.
