This unsewn tea tray cover is created using bead embroidery, a technique in which the seed beads are stitched onto a base of fabric using needle and thread. The main decorative motifs are largely flowers and insects. There is a border made up of floral and ‘Qilin’ motifs that runs along the edge of this panel. The ‘Qilin’ is a mythical hooved Chinese creature that symbolises serenity and prosperity. There are several fertility symbols in this piece. Flowers in full bloom and insects represent fertility and abundance while the ‘Qilin’ is also a symbol of virility. This is set against a lime green background which is also a colour that symbolises fertility. This piece could possibly be used during wedding ceremonies as it represented the couple’s hope to have many children, especially sons.
