Tay went to study at the famed Fred Archer School of Photography in California in the late 1940s. He came back to Singapore and set up his own photo studio, Westlake Photo Services (named after the famous lake in China), in 1953 at Tanjong Katong. The model in this photograph is Tay’s wife clad in a chic sarong kebaya.
