Sun Wu Kong, otherwise known as the Monkey King, is the disciple of the monk, Xuan Zang, from one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature, Journey to the West. It tells the adventures of Xuan Zang and his three disciples during the Tang Dynasty as they embarked on a journey to India in search of Buddhist scriptures. Here, Sun Wu Kong is seen fighting Ne Zha - or Red Baby as depicted in the postcard - in one of several battles Xuan Zang and his disciples faced in their quest; Ne Zha, a mythological figure, is said to hold great powers, possessing a wind-fire wheel on which he rode at breathtaking speeds. Themes from Chinese folklore and legend such as Journey to the West form the foundation of Haw Par Villa, which Aw Boon Haw built in a bid to educate the public about Chinese culture. Originally called Tiger Balm Gardens, the theme park was built in 1937 along Pasir Panjang Road.
