This jarlet has a fine even apple-green glaze that enhances the lobed form. The base of the jarlet has a wash of rich-chocolate coloured slip (a diluted clay mixture) applied to the base. This technique was used by Vietnamese potters possibly as a trademark, or a style of finishing that emulated the orange tone found on the base of Chinese ceramics.Glazed wares such this copper green cup appear to be an early export type in Vietnamese ceramics. They reflect a desire to emulate Chinese wares in an attempt to capture a share of the export market for high-fired glazed ceramics. Among the Vietnamese monochrome early export wares, such copper-green wares made a brief appearance in the 14th century.
