This embroidered silk panel is created using Knot stitches and metallic thread couching. Gold thread couching is used here to outline the main features in the decorative patterns. Couching is a technique in which the materials are laid on the surface of a ground fabric and kept in place with stitches of the same or different thread. The main decorative features of this piece include the ‘Qilin’, phoenix and peony blossoms. ‘Qilins’ are hooved mythical Chinese creatures that represent good fortune while the phoenix is a symbol of wealth and prosperity. Peonies are symbolic of wealth and prosperity. Such works of embroidery had several possible functions. They were used as ornamental panels that served as door hangings. They were also used as drapes for windows among others. The auspicious symbols on this panel suggest it was used in wedding ceremonies.
