Wood - A pair of wooden footstools with base

‘Bangku kaki’ were low stools used by elderly Peranakans for propping up their feet when they were sitting. These were usually made of red and gold namwood such this piece. The sides and the cabriole like legs are gilded with floral and other designs. A more luxurious form of these footstools was the ‘bangku kaki kahwain’ or ceremonial wedding footstool. These were commissioned in pairs. The bride and bridegroom would rest their feet on the footstool while seated. The stool seat was covered with an oval padding of cotton wool and over this an oval panel of red or brown velvet embroidered with auspicious wedding motifs of rocaille beads is mounted with brass tacks.
