Although Mao was often portrayed in a god-like manner in Cultural Revolution propaganda, he was also depicted in ways that made him seem more down to earth. The image of Mao with a farmer’s straw hat would have drawn him closer to the peasantry. Behind is written the opening verse of the song, “Chairman Mao comes to our farm”, which describes the joy his visit brought to the masses.
