This wooden case consists of a set of goldsmith’s scales, a pair of weights and a horn-shaped mallet. G.B. Gardner, an early Southeast Asian explorer and scholar, notes in his journal that this kind of scale was used by Bugis merchants in Johor. The Bugis people were traders and warriors who live on the south-western peninsula of Sulawesi Island. They first arrived in Malaysia during the 16th century and settled in various parts of Malaysia in the states of Johor, Selangor and Pulau Pinang.
