Quotations from Chairman Mao (Mao zhuxi yulu, 毛主席语录) is a collection of quotations selected from Mao Zedong's past speeches and writings. Popularly known as the “Little Red Book”, it was first published in 1964. Lin Biao, the Minister of Defence and head of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), was responsible for spearheading this compilation of Mao’s quotations.Originally intended as an ideological guide for PLA officers, it was reprinted from 1966 for wider circulation. The Little Red Book was read religiously and discussed at group study sessions. People internalised the contents so much that they even conversed in Mao’s quotations.
