Lotus-shaped gold foil

This piece of gold foil was probably for ceremonial purposes, although the exact location where it was found is unknown. Usually, gold foil items were found in the caskets containing relics under the foundations of ancient temples in Java and Southeast Asia. By laying the gold foil, priests were perhaps creating the temples as symbolic models of the universe where the gods might appear when invoked. Other than lotus shape, other pieces of gold foil belonging to this period come in the disc and rectangular shapes, as well as in the shape of the tortoise which represents immortality.
