This is a pair of lacquered wooden candlesticks. Lacquer is a clear or coloured varnish that dries by solvent evaporation. There is also a curing process that produces a hard, durable finish. This gives the product either a matte or glossy finish. These candlesticks were possibly made from a variety of wood ranging from blackwood to red and gold namwood. Teak was also used as it was the most abundantly available in the Southeast Asian region. However, it was not the wood of choice as it was considered wood of an inferior quality.
