This pair of wall plaques is stiffened with layers of cardboard and cotton wadding. The decorative motifs are formed with tiny coloured ‘seed beads’ or ‘Rocaille beads’ using the technique of threading. The motifs on this pair of plaques are largely floral in their design. Bead tassels hang from the bottom of these pieces. These ornaments were usually hung on the wall or attached to ceremonial furniture in the bridal chamber. Cut work ornaments of this type are peculiar to Straits Chinese embroidery from Penang.
