This is a fine example of ritual whiteware made for use in temples or tombs during the Ly and Tran dynasties (1009-1400). It was probably used as an oil lamp. The parrot shape was probably inspired by Indian metalwork forms. It is covered with an ivory-white glaze with incised features such as feathers that are highlighted in iron-brown glaze. The base was carved in the form of a lotus, a Buddhist motif that symbolizes purity. The appearance of the lotus on many white-glazed wares reflects the rising importance of Buddhism, which became the state religion in Vietnam at this time.
