Panel

This rectangular embroidered panel is created using bead embroidery or threading. This is a technique where the coloured seed beads are stitched onto a base fabric using needle and thread. The main decorative motifs on this piece are flowers (possibly rose-like peonies) and birds. Peonies and roses were both symbols of wealth and luxury. Their conflation into a single flower could possibly represent change in the Peranakan way of life as a result of colonial influence.Such panels were usually used as table covers, panels for picture frames, as ornamental hangings, pillow and bolster cases among others.
