Erected in 1885 and initially used as a water tower for the town of Teluk Anson in Perak, the structure also served as a clock tower that kept time for the community by chiming every 15 minutes. Furthermore, the distinctive landmark was used by ships as a beacon to help guide them into the town’s harbour. As it was constructed over an underground stream, the foundations of the structure proved to be unstable and the tower began to lean a few years after its construction. It is now a tourist attraction, referred to as the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan, after the town changed its name following the end of colonial rule in Malaya.
