Written in fine muhaqqaq script, this Qur’an juz’ or section contains the first of the 30 sections of the Qur’an. Aside from having alternating lines in gold and black, the word ‘Allah’ or God, is picked out in gold in lines written in black. Muhaqqaq was a script, which was very much favoured for copying Qur’ans in Egypt and Turkey from the 14th century onwards, but lost its prominence in the 17th century because of changing tastes. Many beautiful, large Qur’ans in muhaqqaq were endowed to mosques and madrasah (theological colleges).
