This pair of rectangular off-white embroidered panels is formed using the method of the satin stitch. It is a series of flat stitches that are used to completely cover a section of the background fabric so as to create a design. The centre portion of each panel consists of two pairs of stags and a pair of phoenixes. These animals are set amongst peony blossoms. These motifs are auspicious symbols in the Chinese culture. Peonies symbolised spring, which was considered an auspicious time to get married. They are also symbols of romance and love. The pair of phoenix symbolises the wedding couple and high virtue and grace.Stags signify longevity. Panels such as these had varied uses. They were traditionally used as table covers, panels for picture frames and ornamental hangings to name a few. This pair was possibly used as pillow covers in the bridal chamber.
