Established in the late 1880s, the Malacca Club was the first European social club formed in Malacca, offering sporting and recreational activities such as cricket and tennis. It initially occupied a building at Fort Road that formerly housed the Eastern Exchange Telegraph Company. In 1912, construction was completed on a new building near the town square overlooking the Padang and the sea, to serve as the clubhouse, where the Club remained until the expiry of its land lease in 1984. The iconic building with its domed towers was acquired by the government and converted into a museum known as the Proclamation of Independence Memorial. In 1985, the Club shifted into two renovated shophouses at Melaka Raya. At present, it is located at Jalan Syed Abdul Aziz.
