'Chinese Temple'

This drawing by Austrian diplomat Eugen von Ransonnet shows the interior of the Thian Hock Keng temple, where the Chinese gave thanks for enjoying safe travel on the seas. This image was printed using chromolithography. The temple was located at the coastline until 1879, when reclamation work left it inland. This drawing was published in von Ransonnet's 'Skizzen aus Singapur und Djohor' (Sketches: Singapore and Johore) in 1876.
