This gold plaque illustrates the coronation of Rama (the hero of the Indian epic, Ramayana). This piece is embossed and cut out of sheet gold with exquisite details worked on the surface. At the center of the plaque, under the canopy sits the enthroned Rama and his wife, Sita and their attendants. Hanuman, the monkey god is touching Rama's feet while Vibhishana (younger brother of the demon Ravana) offers Rama a garland. This image also represents an age of peace and happiness which according to the Hindu tradition is the utopian state of Ramarajya. Such gold plaques are rare but the representation of Rama’s court scenes are much favoured all over India.
