This embroidered panel is made using knot stitching, metallic thread couching and raised metallic thread couching. The decorative motifs on this piece include the ‘Qilin’ (a hoofed mythical Chinese creature), phoenix, peony blossom and butterflies. These are set against a bright red background. Gold thread couching is used to fill up the main decorative features such as the ‘Qilin’ and the phoenix. The motifs on this panel are considered auspicious in the Chinese culture. The ‘Qilin’ is a good omen that brings good fortune. The phoenix represents high virtue. Peony blossoms symbolise wealth as well as spring, which is considered a good time for marriage. Butterflies represent romance and love. Red is a traditionally auspicious colour that represents happiness in marriage. This larger type of panel was possibly made in China and shipped to its Straits Chinese customers in Southeast Asia. The auspicious motifs suggest that it was used in wedding ceremonies. It was possibly used as a door hanging at the entrance of the bridal chamber.
