This crowned seated Buddha adorned with jewellery and seated in Bhumisparsha mudra (earth-witnessing gesture) was produced in the northern Thai region of Lan Na around the first half of the 16th century. It has a dark brown patina, elongated earlobes and wears armbands and finger rings. One interpretation is that the figure depicts an episode from a Pali text entitled Jambupatisutta, where the Buddha successfully converts the heretic king, Jambupati.
