This skirt was made by one of the many communities living in Northern Chin State, a hilly region of west Burma on the border with India. It features diamond, zig-zags and other geometric motifs woven with naturally dyed wool in red, white, yellow and blue on a red ground. The design was made by weaving threads horizontally across the skirt – a technique known as supplementary weft weaving. The processes of natural dyeing and supplementary weaving were time consuming, hence some skirts were only worn on special occasions.
