Bamboo vests were used by both the bride and bridegroom in the traditional Peranakan wedding. They were worn underneath the elaborate and bulky robes. They served as ventilation as it creates a thin pocket of air which helped to keep the wearer cool. The vest is also believed to have allowed perspiration that resulted from wearing the heavy and elaborate wedding garments in tropical climate, to drip away from the wedding robes.
