Death of Kumbhakarna

This painting in earth colours depicts the scene where Hanuman (left), Garvaksha, Nila (right) and other monkeys are trying to free Sugriva (Sugriwa) from Kumbhakarna (Kumbakarna) (centre). In Bali, Kumbhakarna is a popular character. Despite his laziness and gluttony, he exhibits bravery and loyalty in his choice to fight Rama for the sake of his brother Ravana (Rawana). In the Malay 'wayang kulit siam' puppet tradition, Kumbhakarna (Kumbakerna) challenges Sugriva (Sagariwa) to a contest of strength. Sugriva bends over to uproot a tree and Kumbhakarna takes him by the arms and flies off with him. Hanuman saves him by throwing Kumbakharna against a mountain whilst Lakshmana (Laksmana) kills him with an arrow. In some versions, the monkeys Nila and Anggada punch Kumbhakarna’s ears to make him release Sugriva.
