This photograph shows the classical-style Central Police Station at South Bridge Road, completed in 1886. Together with the French-style Police Courts across the road, both buildings were substantial public works reflecting an eclectic mix of architectural styles popular during the late 1880s and presented the outward appearance of the cosmopolitan colonial port-city that Singapore was becoming at the turn of the 20th century. Unfortunately, neither of these buildings remains in the townscape of Singapore, having been demolished in 1977 and 1975 respectively.
