Panel

This pair of panels is created using the technique of bead netting. A surface of beads is created by inserting single or multiple threads through them to link them into a unified structure. A base fabric is usually not needed. The main decorative motifs on these panels are red and pink flowers (possibly peonies or roses) created from various coloured seed beads. Peonies are auspicious symbols of wealth and prosperity. Roses became increasingly common in beadwork of Peranakans influenced by western culture during the colonial period. Bead tassels hang from the bottom of the panel. These panels are possibly window valances hung at the uppermost part of windows to conceal the unsightly parts of the structure.
