When Singapore was granted self-governance by the British colonial government in 1959, Cathay-Keris announced that the studio would produce Chinese-language feature films to help in the development of an independent culture for Singapore. In 1960, the studio screened its first Mandarin film, ‘Lion City’, a love story set against the backdrop of social class struggles and Singapore’s first election.
