A large table-top wooden radio

Before the invention of the transistor radio, table-top radios were available in households and were usually placed in the kitchen, sitting room or bedroom.The idea of radio as entertainment took off in 1920 in the West. As the years passed, radio ownership gradually increased. However, in Singapore, radio services only became affordable to most common people in 1949, when Rediffusion, Singapore's first private and cable-transmitted radio station started operation.
