Canting

This pen-like instrument, known as the canting, is used in the process of batik making. It consists of a bamboo handle, and a copper bowl with four spouts through which hot wax is drawn on the cloth. The molten wax prevents the dye from colouring certain areas of the design. Canting with multiple spouts could be used to draw more complicated designs. Hand-drawn batik by canting is known as batik tulis and is almost an exclusively women’s task. On the other hand, the method of waxing batik by copper stamps is dominated by men.
