A short but full brush with short handle in redwood. Ideal for writing large characters the size of a Chinese measuring instrument called a 'dou', this large brush is referred to by Chinese scholars as 'doubi'. Unlike common 'dou' brushes made of soft hairs of a goat or the hare, this unusual example has a brush tip of resilient horse mane hair. A coil of thread secured around the base by the user maintains a sharp tip for powerful brush strokes. The curvaceous handle of attractive grain pattern, has maintained the lustrous patina of age.
