This textile has an indigo blue ground of handspun cotton with an intricate design of brightly coloured silk threads woven into the cloth using the warp wrapping technique. In this process, different coloured threads are slowly and meticulously wrapped around the warp threads, one row at a time, as the wefts are woven into the cloth. The most distinctive decorations on this sarong are the colourful, highly stylised and geometric motifs, which are referred to locally as "water animals" or 'subaw'. Certain parts of the design are then filled in using embroidery. Fine bands of ikat designs add further intricacy to the cloth. This piece is a ceremonial one and only used for special occassions.
