This limepot with lid in the form an elephant is decorated with incised details. A dark brown glaze covers the elephant's body ending just above the short legs revealing the buff coloured clay.The elephant was a revered and much-loved animal in Southeast Asia. It was a domesticated beast that was used not only in the construction of palaces and bulidings, but also for warfare.The royal cities of Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai in north-central Thailand were at the heart of one of the largest ceramic-producing centres in Southeast Asia during the 14th century. Si Satchanalai, which was later renamed Sawankhalok, came to refer to ceramics that originated from either of these two areas.
