This dish features a fish motif at the centre surrounded by scolling vegetation around the walls. Painted underglaze iron-brown decoration is typical of Sukhothai wares. It has been suggested that such dishes bear a resemblance to Jizhou wares from southern China. However, it is unclear how this influence was imparted. Advanced kiln technology at Sukhothai resulted in high-fired glazed stonewares. This innovation and the excavation of similar ‘fish dishes’ at sites around Southeast Asia, indicate the role of Sukhothai as an important centre for ceramic production during the 12th to 14th centuries.
