The yektar, or tutuni as it is sometimes referred to, is made from a piece of bamboo. It has only one string and no frets. The bamboo is attached to the underside of a hollow, wooden cylinder, one side of which is closed by a parchment. In the centre of the parchment is a hole through which the string is passed and tied in a knot to prevent it from slipping back. The yektar is used by mendicants and is strummed in accompaniment to their monotonous chanting. It is popular in the Deccan and the Central Provinces and used together with a drum.
