A scene from the film, 'Cucu Datuk Merah'

‘Cucu Datuk Merah’ (Datuk Merah’s grandson) is a Cathay-Keris film directed by M. Amin. Awang Janggut has always been proud of being Datuk Merah’s grandson, a respected admiral in Terengganu. Unlike other villagers, he refuses to work as a labourer, preferring to live in poverty with his wife, Wan Kuntum, and helper, Mak Dukun. One day, he saves Siti Molek, who is harassed by Long Daik. Grateful to Awang Janggut, Siti Molek persuades her rich father to hire him as their bodyguard. Spending all his time with Siti Molek, he neglects his responsibilities as a husband to his pregnant wife. Wan Kuntum eventually suffers a miscarriage and falls seriously ill. Long Daik, who is seeking revenge on Awang Janggut, gives Mak Dukun poisonous roots but tells her that they are medicinal herbs sent by Awang Janggut for Wan Kuntum. Unbeknownst to Mak Dukun, she boils the poisonous roots and serves the broth to Wan Kuntum, thinking that it will make her better.
