This is a photograph of a young P. Ramlee, a famous and well-respected Malay actor, filmmaker and musician. He was born on 22 March 1929 in Penang, Malaysia. P. Ramlee left Penang for Singapore to work for Shaw Brothers’ Malay Film Productions (MFP). He made his acting debut in B.S. Rajhans’ film ‘Chinta’ (1948). He eventually left MFP in 1964 for Merdeka Film Productions in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Unappreciated and forgotten during the last few years before his death in 1973, P. Ramlee is now hailed as a cultural icon.
