This stoneware bowl with gently sloping walls and slightly everted rim has 'sgrafitto' decoration or a sroll-like design carved on the brown-glazed exterior and a chocolate slip (liquid clay) on the base. The interior of the bowl has a cream-white glaze.Typically Vietnamese stonewares are more heavily potted than Chinese wares with bowls often having a brown-slipped or chocolate base, a distinctive feature of later export wares.Vietnam entered the international trade during the 14th century and produced the greatest volume and variety of wares for Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia. However, by the 16th century, due to intense competition from the Chinese kilns, the export of Vietnamese wares to these markets was greatly reduced.
