Kendi

This kendi has a bulbous spout and an extended neck with a design of birds among foliage. A layer of varnish over the entire vessel has given the decoration an iron-brown colour. An area on the mammiform spout was cleaned with acetone to reveal a blackish-blue decoration. The extended neck was repaired and re-decorated.Kendi is a vessel with a bulbous body, straight neck and a spout set at an angle on the body. It derives its name from an old Sanskrit term for water pot and is used in Southeast Asia for drinking and for water storage. The porcelain kendis from China serve as ceremonial vessels or display objects.
