This globular 'sancai' ('three-colour ware') jar has a dark amber lead glaze applied over a thin layer of white slip (liquid clay), which is visible just above the foot. The three-colour technique grew out of the monochrome lead glazes of the Han dynasty (206 BCE-220CE). This type of glaze includes various shades of brown, blue, green and cream which were combined or used on their own.
